Tracy Talk
November 24th, 2009 by Tracy SummersI am looking forward to a great weekend…how about you?
We have some great ideas on the website for Halloween and costumes etc…but here’s my secret for pumpkin seed roasting…shhhh
don’t take all the pumpkin goo off…there’s flavor and vitamins in the goo and it helps the spices you add to stick better.
My kids like the brown sugar and cinnamon pumpkin seeds I make…give it a try.
I also love to carve pumpkins and I use the Pumpkin Carving Masters patterns.I’ll put up some examples from my kids and myself starting next week.

It’s almost Thanksgiving!
Please share your tradition or recipeeor story with me and we’ll talk about them on Wednesday.

I can tell you what not to do…don’t try Southern Frying a turkey for the first time with a house full of guests coming….:)
‘Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle’
Categories: Dogs, Pets in the News, Hero Pets, Celebrity Pets, Adoption
Maj. Brian Dennis and Nubs today.Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
When Maj. Brian Dennis of the United States Marine Corps met a wild stray dog with shorn ears while serving in Iraq, he had no idea of the bond they would form, leading to seismic changes in both their lives. “The general theme of the story of Nubs is that if you’re kind to someone, they’ll never forget you — whether it be person or animal,” Dennis tells Paw Nation.
In October 2007, Dennis and his team of 11 men were in Iraq patrolling the Syrian border. One day, as his team arrived at a border fort, they encountered a pack of stray dogs — not uncommon in the barren, rocky desert that was home to wolves and wild dogs.
“We all got out of the Humvee and I started working when this dog came running up,” recalls Dennis. “I said, ‘Hey buddy’ and bent down to pet him.” Dennis noticed the dog’s ears had been cut. “I said, ‘You got little nubs for ears.’” The name stuck. The dog whose ears had been shorn off as a puppy by an Iraqi soldier (to make the dog “look tougher,” Dennis says) became known as Nubs.
Dennis fed Nubs scraps from his field rations, including bits of ham and frosted strawberry Pop Tarts. “I didn’t think he’d eat the Pop Tart, but he did,” says Dennis.
At night, Nubs accompanied the men on night patrols. “I’d get up in the middle of the night to walk the perimeter with my weapon and Nubs would get up and walk next to me like he was doing guard duty,” says Dennis.
The next day, Dennis said goodbye to Nubs, but he didn’t forget about the dog. He began mentioning Nubs in emails he wrote to friends and family back home. “I found a dog in the desert,” Dennis wrote in an email in October 2007. “I call him Nubs. We clicked right away. He flips on his back and makes me rub his stomach.”
“Every couple of weeks, we’d go back to the border fort and I’d see Nubs every time,” says Dennis. “Each time, he followed us around a little more.” And every time the men rumbled away in their Humvees, Nubs would run after them. “We’re going forty miles an hour and he’d be right next to the Humvee,” says Dennis. “He’s a crazy fast dog. Eventually, he’d wear out, fall behind and disappear in the dust.”
On one trip to the border fort in December 2007, Dennis found Nubs was badly wounded in his left side where he’d been stabbed with a screwdriver. “The wound was infected and full of pus,” Dennis recalls. “We pulled out our battle kits and poured antiseptic on his wound and force fed him some antibiotics wrapped in peanut butter.” That night, Nubs was in so much pain that he refused food and water and slept standing up because he couldn’t lay down. Dennis and his team left again the next day, but Dennis thought about Nubs the entire time, hoping the dog was still alive.
Excerpt, “Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle,”Little, Brown for Young Readers
Two weeks later, when Dennis and his team returned, he found Nubs alive and well. “I had patched him up and that seemed to be a turning point in how he viewed me,” says Dennis. This time, when Dennis and his team left the fort, Nubs followed. Though the dog lost sight of the Humvees, he never gave up. For two days, Nubs endured freezing temperatures and packs of wild dogs and wolves, eventually finding his way to Dennis at a camp an incredible 70 miles south near the Jordanian border.
“There he was, all beaten and chewed up,” says Dennis. “I knew immediately that Nubs had crossed through several dog territories and fought and ran, and fought and ran,” says Dennis. The dog jumped on Dennis, licking his face.
Most of the 80 men at the camp welcomed Nubs, even building him a doghouse. But a couple of soldiers complained, leading Dennis’ superiors to order him to get rid of the dog. With his hand forced, Dennis decided that the only thing to do was bring Nubs to America. He began coordinating Nubs’ rescue effort. Friends and family in the States helped, raising the $5,000 it would cost to transport Nubs overseas.
Finally, it was all arranged. Nubs was handed over to volunteers in Jordan, who looked after the dog and sent him onto to Chicago, then San Diego, where Dennis’ friends waited to pick him up. Nubs lived with Dennis’ friends and began getting trained by local dog trainer Graham Bloem of the Snug Pet Resort. “I focused on basic obedience and socializing him with dogs, people and the environment,” says Bloem.
A month later, Dennis finished his deployment in Iraq and returned home to San Diego, where he immediately boarded a bus to Camp Pendleton to be reunited with Nubs. “I was worried he wouldn’t remember me,” says Dennis. But he needn’t have worried. “Nubs went crazy,” recalls Dennis. “He was jumping up on me, licking my head.”
Dennis’ experience with Nubs led to a children’s picture book, called “Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle,” published by Little, Brown for Young Readers. They have appeared on the Today Show and will be appearing on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien on Monday.
Was it destiny that Dennis met Nubs and brought him to America? “I don’t know about that,” says Dennis. “It’s been a strange phenomenon. It’s been a blessing. I get drawings mailed to me that children have drawn of Nubs with his ears cut off. It makes me laugh.”

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Jun 15, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Legendary entertainer Dolly Parton and Girl Scouts of Tanasi Council are launching a global “Coat of Many Colors” patch program created and piloted this spring by Tanasi Girl Scouts. It’s based on Parton’s popular ballad about taking pride in yourself–no matter the circumstances.
“Have you ever felt bad about being different?” Parton asks Girl Scouts. “I’ll bet you have, but you shouldn’t–being different is what makes you special!”
Parton immortalized her coat of many colors in her 1971 song of the same name. Parton’s mother sewed the now famous garment from rags. Young Dolly proudly wore the coat to school, only to find classmates making fun of it.
Parton turned the devastating experience into a signature song; now, through Tanasi Council, earning “Coat of Many Colors” patch helps Girl Scouts develop self-esteem and compassion for others.
The first 450 girls who earned the patch are from Parton’s native East Tennessee, and she honored them at her Dollywood theme park over the weekend with colorful patches and huge hugs.
She also performed the legendary song, weaving a strong connection with an audience a generation apart in age, but strongly united in spirit.
“Now, I think twice before saying something to someone who looks different; I don’t want to hurt their feelings,” says Girl Scout Melia Killion. “Plus, you can be rich without having a lot of money, as long as you have people who love you … And I am rich!”
Cheers erupted when Parton announced that the event marked the patch’s global rollout. Beginning today, details are available at tanasi.org.
“Earning this patch helps girls step out and find ways to care for those in need. And in our challenging economy, so many are in need,” says Mary Leidig, chief marketing officer for Tanasi Council.
The celebration ended with Girl Scouts joining their role model in a parade through Dollywood to the cheers of thousands of fans.
Parton is a lifetime member of Girl Scouts of Tanasi Council and wore her own Girl Scout uniform, complete with patches representing her lifetime of accomplishments, to the celebration.
Before catching Wynonna’s performance at this year’s CMA Music Festival, fans will have the chance to meet her and Naomi Judd as well as check out The Judd Museum this weekend in nearby Franklin, Tenn.
The mother/daughter duo transformed a vacant building, formerly Gray’s Drug Store, into a museum celebrating the singers 25 years in the music biz.
The exhibit includes never-before-seen photographs, costumes, tour memorabilia, and a fan photograph tribute.
Wynonna will then perform at the VAULT concert stage at LP Field. According to the fest’s Web site, Wynonna is scheduled to perform along with Trace Adkins, Jamey Johnson, Lee Ann Womack, Martina McBride and Jose Turner between 8 and 11 p.m. Specific show times for each artist arenot listed on the site.
The Judds Museum is located at 332 Main St. in downtown Franklin.
The CMA Music Festival, which was formally known as “Fan Fair,” features performances from artists including Trace Adkins, Brooks & Dunn, Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Julianne Hough, Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts, Martina McBride, Taylor Swift, Brad Paisley, Montgomery Gentry and Reba McEntire.

Lead Single “It’s A Business Doing Pleasure With You” Goes On Sale Today At All Digital Retailers
On October 20th, Curb Records will release Southern Voice, Tim McGraw’s first studio album in two and a half years. (See below for track listing.) Lead single “It’s A Business Doing Pleasure With You” is available now at all digital retailers. An up-tempo, tongue-in-cheek tale about the price paid for loving a woman who loves designer labels, the song was penned by Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger and singer-songwriter Brett James. “It’s A Business Doing Pleasure With You” was #1 Most Added in its first and second weeks at radio and is already 15* on the Billboard Country Singles chart.
With the new album, McGraw once again pushes the bounds of his artistry with characteristic honesty, grit and soul – qualities that have, throughout history, exemplified the Southern voice. Recorded in Nashville with his longtime producer, Byron Gallimore (Faith Hill, Sugarland, Phil Vassar), it is the follow-up to Let It Go, which debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 in April of 2007. McGraw will support Southern Voice with an extensive tour in 2010.

One of the things I love about Country Music is the close connection between artists and fans!
Country music fans are generous! Trace knows that first hand. However he was suprised to find out recently how close they pay attention! In the past fans have brought him his favorite cake or baby gifts when his daughters were born…now they are bringing golf balls! Not just any golf balls, astute fans have started to bring his favorite golf balls (Titleist Pro V 1’s) as a gift to his shows. Thanks to Trace’s GIG-VIDS, fans have noticed Trace often likes to play golf before shows and wanted to make sure he always has what he needs while golfing. Just as long as fans DON’T throw the balls on the stage and only give them to him before or after the show, that will be one present we know he can always appreciate and use.ya gotta love it!
